Advent Gaming Calendar 2019 Day 14: Street Fighter V

Continuing the fighting genre, let’s talk about Street Fighter V’s opening. I will mostly be talking about the original opening and not the Arcade or Championship openings. As of me writing this post, I have never owned or played for more than an hour any of the games. At this point I am more of a Tekken person since I played that the most, but I have to give credit where credit is due.

This opening looks and feels phenomenal. The artistic cel-shading fit the style of Street Fighter and makes it feel wholly unique. The colorless background makes all the characters stick out with their own unique color. The streaking effect is my favorite ascetic from this scene. There is something about the body moving and leaving a part of it behind to create another piece of art. When I first showed this opening to my wife she mentioned that she could not tell who was a good person or a villain. I will say that outside Chun-Li, Cammy, Ken, and Ryu, everyone else can easily be mistaken as a villain. Even with the last shot of Ryu at the end can make someone think that he turns evil at some point. If I did have one complaint overall is that it does feel too long of an opening that some players may watch it once and be done with it. Again with the episodic feel, I feel that the opening for the Arcade edition is a continuation of this one. This one still has my attention however just due to the overall artwork and aesthetic.

Tune in tomorrow for Day 15!
